Discovering the Charms of Taormina: A Sicilian Gem

Nestled on the eastern coast of Sicily, Taormina is a town that effortlessly combines ancient history, breathtaking natural beauty, and timeless elegance. With its picturesque setting high above the shimmering waters of the Ionian Sea and a rich cultural heritage, Taormina has earned its reputation as one of Italy's most enchanting destinations. Cass and I both agreed this had to be one of the top destinations we had ever visited. We loved absolutely everything about Taormina. Join me on a journey through the captivating streets of Taormina as we uncover the treasures that make this Sicilian gem a must-visit for travellers seeking a taste of la dolce vita.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to!

How to get there

We opted for the coastal train journey from Catania to Taormina, which lasted approximately one hour. This proved to be an economical and highly efficient mode of transportation. We then walked up the STEEPEST hill of life to get to the city... we still don't know what the best way was to do this lol. For more on our stay in Catania, check out my blog here.

Worth the uphill hike lol

Things to do

1) The Ancient Greek Theater

Taormina's most iconic attraction is undoubtedly the Ancient Greek Theater. This historic site, perched dramatically on the hillside, offers visitors not only a glimpse into the past but also panoramic views that are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Built in the 3rd century BC, this remarkably well-preserved theatre still hosts cultural events and performances today, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and art lovers alike.

Such a cool piece of history!

Piazza IX Aprile in Taormina is a charming and historic square known for its stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. This picturesque gathering spot is adorned with quaint cafes, boutiques, and the iconic Church of Saint Joseph, making it a must-visit destination for tourists exploring the enchanting town of Taormina.

Stroll through the gardens, enjoy the scent of blooming flowers, and take in breathtaking views of the sea and Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. It's the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon or a romantic sunset walk.

5) Scenic Beaches

For those seeking sun and sea, Taormina has several beaches to choose from. Isola Bella, a tiny island connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar, is a favourite spot for sunbathing and swimming. Spiaggia Mazzeo, a more expansive beach, offers a variety of water sports and beachside bars where you can savour a refreshing drink while basking in the Sicilian sun.

Sicilian cuisine is renowned for its bold flavours and mouthwatering dishes, and Taormina is no exception. Local restaurants serve up a tantalizing array of seafood, pasta, and traditional Sicilian specialties. Be sure to try the famous Sicilian granita and cannoli, sweet treats that will satisfy your sweet tooth and leave you craving more. You should definitely give Tao's salads a shot – they're incredibly fresh and tasty, and their Granita slushies are absolutely fantastic!
